"I just love watching movies, you know?"
"I love watching movies too."
What's the deal with "Babylon" (2022)? I mean, seriously, it's like they took the Roaring Twenties, threw in a dash of Hollywood glamour and said, "You know what the 1920's needs? More drama!" Because we all know nothing says 'riveting cinema' like flapper dresses and the first world problems of the rich and famous.
And the dialogue! Oh, the dialogue. It tries so hard to be profound. It's like they hired a philosophy major with a penchant for overpriced lattes and a thesaurus. Every other line is a cryptic musing about life, love, and the pursuit of the perfect silent film. It's like living inside a black and white fortune cookie.
I will say this about Hollywood's silent era. It's like that guy who never talks. You always wonder what deep and meaningful cogitation he is pondering. Then he opens his mouth and you wish he hadn't. Much like this movie!
If you enjoyed "Babylon", then you'll likely appreciate "La La Land". This movie, like "Babylon", is directed by Damien Chazelle and offers a nostalgic look at Tinseltown. It's a heartfelt tribute to classic musicals with engaging performances from Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
Birdman (2014):You may want to give "Birdman" a try if you loved the theatrical elements of "Babylon". Directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, this film examines the struggle of past-their-prime actors trying to reclaim their glory days. It’s a striking and unique movie that combines comedy, drama, and magical realism in a refreshing way.
The Artist (2011):"The Artist" is another film that beautifully encapsulates the golden age of Hollywood similarly to "Babylon". Directed by Michel Hazanavicius, this silent black-and-white movie is a touching and charismatic tribute to cinema's early years, offering a delightful and engaging spectacle despite its lack of dialogue.
Moulin Rouge! (2001):If the historical elements of "Babylon" had you captivated, "Moulin Rouge!" might be up your alley. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, this vibrant and dazzling musical set in 1899 Paris combines elements of romance, drama, and musical seamlessly into its narrative, making it an unforgettable cinematic experience.
Hail, Caesar! (2016):Coen Brothers' "Hail, Caesar!" is a great take on old Hollywood, with an ensemble cast and various subplots much like "Babylon". It's an underrated gem that sure knows how to coil multiple storylines into one entertaining picture.
